Impressionism changed painting by chasing feeling instead of perfect detail, and that shift still shapes how artists work today.
Instead of getting every detail right, impressionist painters went after the feeling of a moment. Monet, van Gogh and others leaned into visible brushstrokes, bold colour, movement - painting how they experienced a scene rather than exactly how it looked.
That approach still runs through a lot of contemporary work.
When colour and brushwork carry the story, a painting stops being just an image of something. It turns into an emotional response - to a moment, a place, a person.
For a lot of contemporary painters, impressionism opened up a kind of freedom: less about following rules, more about instinct, mood, personal read on things.
That’s also why no two paintings ever turn out the same. Each one is shaped by whatever the artist was feeling, seeing and working with at the time - which is what keeps the result feeling alive and personal.
