Unseen
R 8 960
A man stands with his back to us. We get only part of his face, so whatever he’s thinking stays with him.
His body is strong and solid, but who he is stays a mystery. Colour runs across his skin in bold strokes, and small fragments of red, yellow, blue and black break up the picture like scraps of a story - the things that happened to him, the feelings, the layers a person collects on the way to becoming who they are.
Two bars of red cut straight across him and block part of the view, so you’re always aware of what you can see and what’s being kept from you. The turquoise background is cool and the body is warm. That contrast pulls you in, while something stays just out of reach.
Everyone has a side they show and a side they keep to themselves. Often the person other people see is only a small part of who’s really there. Unseen doesn’t explain any further than that, and what you read into it is up to you. It’s a painting about identity, about being exposed, and about how complicated people are.
